- *Bacillus Coagulans is a Gram-positive bacterium, facultative anaerobic, hard-walled bacteria. The colonies are round and white with neat edges and smooth surface. Under the microscope, the cells are rhabditiform, the ends are blunt, the spore is on one end, and there is no flagellum.
- * The optimum growth temperature is 37℃-50℃
- *The optimum growth pH is 6.5-7.0.
- * Fermentation of it can produce lactic acid. So it belongs to the intestinal lactic acid bacteria, which is called "spore-like lactic acid bacteria".
- * It can produce coagulation and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.

High Temperature Resistance
After heat-humidity-treated for 10 min at the temperature of 80℃, the survival rate of Bacillus Coagulans was over 95%.
The survival rate of Bacillus Coagulans can be more than 48.2% after acid-treated for 6 h at the pH value of 2.0. The survival rate of BacillusCoagulans can stay high after acid-treated for one year at the pH value of 2.42.
Research shows that, the survival rate of Bacillus Coagulans can reach to 78.3% after cholate-treated for 24 h at the concentration of 0.9%. The survival rate can reach to 84.3% after cholate-treated for 24 h at the concentration of 0.3%.
- Produces lactic acid and coagulin to inhibit pathogens
The mixture of lactic acid and some amines with low molecular weight produced by Bacillus Coagulans has a certain inhibitory effect on common intestinal pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella and Proteus. Meanwhile, Bacillus Coagulans can secrete the antibacterial peptide substance –coagulin which is protein consisted of 44 amino acid residues and has positive charge and cationic properties. It contains amphoteric or hydrophobic regions. The cell membrane of bacteria contains phospholipids and the cell wall is acidic. Positively charged coagulin can penetrate the cell membrane of target cells and directly kill pathogenic bacteria.
